DSCO Certification Overview

What Is a Dispatch SMART Certified Operator?

A Dispatch SMART Certified Operator (DSCO) is an individual who has completed the required program components and demonstrated an established level of knowledge, judgment, and operational understanding related to waterslide and attraction dispatch.

The certification is intended to recognize operators who can do more than recall procedures—they understand the principles behind effective operations and how to apply them in real-world situations.

What Does Competency Mean?

Competency reflects an operator’s ability to combine knowledge, judgment, and application.

It includes understanding operational expectations, recognizing changing conditions, making appropriate decisions, communicating effectively, and applying Dispatch SMART principles consistently during normal operations.

It answers the question of "What qualifies you to operate these attractions?"

What Does Certification Represent?

Certification represents that an operator has successfully met the requirements established by the Dispatch SMART Certified Operator program at the time of certification.

It is a recognition of demonstrated understanding and competency—not simply attendance or completion of a training course. The goal is to validate and give credibility to operators in our industry for their knowledge and experience.

Key Components of the Program

  • Education + Knowledge — Building a strong understanding of dispatch principles, operational controls, rider considerations, and human performance.
  • Assessment — Evaluating whether the operator understands and can interpret the concepts taught within Dispatch SMART.
  • Demonstrated Competency — Showing the ability to apply knowledge and judgment to realistic operational situations.
  • Certification + Continued Development — Recognizing operators who meet the standard while encouraging continued learning and improvement over time.

The goal is not simply to create trained operators. It is to develop capable operators who understand their role within the entire dispatch system.

DSCO Certification Process

A Clear Path to Certification

The Dispatch SMART Certified Operator process is designed to move individuals from learning to demonstrated competency through a structured, consistent pathway.

Operators complete required education, build understanding of key Dispatch SMART principles, demonstrate their knowledge through assessment, and meet the established certification standard before receiving the Certified Operator credential.

Learn → Prepare → Demonstrate → Certify

Who Is DSCO For?

The Certified Operator program is designed for individuals who directly influence waterslide and attraction operations, including:

  • Waterslide and attraction managers and directors
  • Lead operators and experienced staff
  • Supervisors responsible for attraction operations
  • Team members preparing for increased operational or leadership responsibility
  • Executives overseeing attraction operations

DSCO answers the question of "What qualifies you to operate this attraction?"

DSCO Certification Requirements

To earn the Dispatch SMART Certified Operator designation, participants complete the required elements of the certification pathway.

RECOGNITION THAT MEANS SOMETHING

The Dispatch SMART Certified Operator credential recognizes individuals who have successfully completed the certification process and demonstrated the knowledge, judgment, and operational understanding established by the program.

Certified Operators receive a formal credential, the right to use the DSCO title designation, and access to the Certified Operator badge for approved professional use.

The value of certification extends beyond the individual. It gives facilities a clearer way to recognize advanced operator development, strengthen internal standards, support leadership pathways, and build greater consistency across waterslide and attraction operations.

DSCO is designed to recognize demonstrated competency while giving both operators and organizations a meaningful way to show that development.

DSCO Certification Integrity

Certification Integrity

The value of any credential depends on the standards behind it.

Dispatch SMART Certified Operator is designed to represent demonstrated knowledge and competency, not simply attendance or course participation. Certification requirements are intentionally structured to create consistency in how the credential is earned and to protect the meaning of the designation over time.

Certification should be earned, understood, and maintained.

Renewal + Maintaining Certification

Certification is not intended to represent a one-time learning event.

Certified Operators may be required to complete renewal activities such as updated education, refresher content, reassessment, or other continuing-development requirements established by the program.

The purpose of renewal is to help keep knowledge current, reinforce important concepts, and support continued operational growth.

What Certification Does — and Does Not — Represent

Certification represents:
Successful completion of the DSCO requirements and demonstrated competency according to the standards established by the program at the time of certification.

Certification does not:
Replace attraction-specific training, manufacturer instructions, facility procedures, local requirements, supervision, or ongoing performance management.

It also does not guarantee that an operator will never make an error or that risk has been eliminated.

DSCO strengthens operator development, but it does not replace the systems, supervision, and site-specific training required to operate an attraction effectively.

Maintaining the Standard

The DSCO credential is intended to remain meaningful as industry knowledge and operational practices continue to evolve.

Program requirements, educational content, assessment standards, and renewal expectations may be updated over time to reflect new learning, emerging operational issues, and continued development of the Dispatch SMART system.

The goal of certification integrity is simple: protect the value of the credential, support continued development, and ensure that “Certified Operator” continues to mean something.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hello@alive-solutions.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A current Dispatch SMART Master Captain certification is required as a pre-requisite to begin DSCO.  No additional pre-requisites are required.

No. Training completion confirms participation in educational content. DSCO certification includes additional requirements intended to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and competency.

No. Operators must still complete all attraction-specific and facility-specific training required by their organization, manufacturers, applicable regulations, and operating procedures.

No. Authorization to operate a specific attraction remains the responsibility of the facility and should be based on attraction-specific training and local requirements. DSCO certification demonstrates knowledge and competence for attraction operators in general, but is not attraction specific.

Certification remains valid for the period established by the DSCO program and may require renewal, refresher education, reassessment, or other continuing-development activities.

Additional learning, coaching, activities, and reassessment may be required before certification is awarded.

Yes. Facilities may choose to use DSCO as part of their internal development, advancement, leadership, or attraction-operations requirements.

Yes. The two programs are designed to complement one another: DSCO focuses on individual operator competency, while Verified Facility focuses on broader operational systems and implementation.

No, certification is granted based on the combination of knowledge and demonstrated expertise at the time of earning the certificate. Renewal requires additional training and demonstration of knowledge / application.

It is possible, but not recommended.  A current Master Captain certificate is required to apply and knowledge of the Dispatch SMART program and training principles is important to your success in the DSCO program.
